When Drones See More — What Does It Really Mean?

Another breakthrough chip hits the headlines. Faster. Smarter. More efficient. NTT Research recently announced a low-power video AI processor that can run real-time 4K object detection at under 20 watts. It could reshape how drones see and react in flight — not because of marketing hype, but because of physics.


Seeing the world without shrinking it

Today’s edge-AI systems often cheat a little. They accept 4K video input, then quietly downscale each frame to 600×600 before running object detection models like YOLO. The result? You save power but lose detail — fine if you’re spotting a truck, not so great if you’re tracking a bird near a propeller.


NTT took a different route. Instead of shrinking the frame, their chip divides each 4K image into tiles, runs detection on each tile in parallel, and then stitches everything back together. It even tracks motion vectors between frames to cut redundant work.

That’s how it stays under 20 watts while keeping full-resolution accuracy. Drones could see further, react faster, and rely less on ground links to make decisions.


Power isn’t the only constraint.

High-res vision onboard sounds like progress. But it also brings a familiar headache — electromagnetic interference. Every new high-speed sensor, bus, and compute block adds switching noise. Stack enough of them in a tight airframe, and your GNSS link, radio, or IMU starts misbehaving.
